Oct 27, · Just winterized the waverunner and had a question about the battery. I have a battery tender jr (trickle charger) and hooked it up to my battery last night.
On the face, this is not particularly offensive if the class exists primarily within the AMYA. But if 99 percent of class boat owners are not AMYA members, and the class specification is approved by a multi-country class organization — then this practice is divisive. As we all know, there are enough challenges to growing and maintaining an RC sailboat class. It is confusing to newcomers and unnecessarily thumbs-a-nose to larger class organizations.
In the past, AMYA members who own one of these two large classes have not attempted to change the class specifications within AMYA, even though they could. But now, a splinter group from the Nirvana class is proposing to vote on a class specification that is not in compliance with the international class rule that Nirvana follows — and tomorrow, it could be the RC Laser specification coming under attack.
We see no positive outcome of such a practice and think AMYA should exempt class specifications from AMYA voting where a superior class rule is in effect. My Prius Four not IV will be parked pretty regularly for about 5 or 6 days at a time, but probably not longer than a week or two at most on occasion. The most appealing option to me seems to be the small solar panels produced by VW which can sit in the rear window and be wired directly to the 12V battery.
They are cheap, and from my understanding can’t supply enough voltage to over-charge the battery. I am not as familiar with these systems as I would like to be, so I have a couple of questions for anyone more experienced than myself: How exactly should this be wired to the battery? I know the cigarette lighter outlet is not hot when the car is off, so that’s a no go.
I also understand that the OBDII port is located in the front dash and may not be the ideal method for wiring this kind of setup. I was hoping to just leave the solar panel in the rear window where the battery is located, but I would need a secure way to wire it directly to the battery.

June 9 I keep many of the cars here in our shop on Battery Tenders and for those with difficult-to-reach batteries, we install the pigtails that usually come with the Battery Tender unit–they’re about 15 inches long and attach to the battery terminal bolts. Then the pigtail can be routed anywhere you like and you can just connect the tender when you park the car. For example, the battery in my ’29 Cadillac is in one of the side tool boxes and the paint was getting chewed up with me going in and out all the time to connect and disconnect the battery.
So I installed a cut-off switch on the side of the box on the underside of the car where I could reach it but didn’t have to open the box. I also ran a pigtail out the side of the box so I can just connect the Battery Tender there without opening the box. The one on Melanie’s Mustang peeks out next to one of the front fog lights in the grille and the one on my ’41 Buick is accessible through one of the passenger-side hood vents. All virtually invisible but easy to reach without going into the car.
Pull in, park, hook up the tender and it’s ready to go next time. A Battery Tender should be able to keep up with the clock’s draining the battery and it will always be ready to drive. I’ve had good luck with the Battery Tenders we have about 30 of them here in the shop and they do seem to keep healthy batteries fully charged.
